The Importance of being Earnest

Rob Frost Photography - The Importance of Being Earnest

Subtitled “A Trivial Comedy for Serious People”, Oscar Wilde’s best known comedy “The Importance of being Earnest” is as fresh and witty today as it was when first performed on Valentine’s Day 1895.

This fresh, fast moving production is assured to send every member of the audience home with a smile.

A contemporary of Wilde’s wrote at the time “…I never remember a greater triumph than the first night of this play”.

It remains one of the few great modern social comedies which has survived the period in which it was written. To quote Wilde himself; "The First Act is ingenious, the Second beautiful, the Third abominably clever”.The text, dripping with Wildean wit, encompasses deception, the practice of Bunburying and the most infamous handbag in English Literature.

 Strangers on a Train

Two strangers meet in the dining car of a train: Guy Haines, an ambitious architect, and Charles Bruno, a charming but spoilt mother’s boy with a liking for drink. Two strangers with one thing in common: each is oppressed by a close relative.

Bruno proposes a solution to their problems: he will kill Guy’s unfaithful wife, in return, Guy will kill Bruno’s much-hated father. Amused, Guy parts from Bruno never imagining that Bruno was serious or that he will ever see him again. But Bruno was deadly serious…….

Strangers on a Train is a brilliant psychological thriller, recently adapted for the stage by Craig Warner from Patricia Highsmith’s original novel.

Oliver! The Musical.

Oliver ! The Musical - Copyright Rob Frost Photography

“Please sir, I want some more.” Oliver’s innocent request lands him in trouble with the workhouse Matron and the Beadle and sets him on his famous adventure.

He is sold to a local undertaker, but runs away and is picked up by the Artful Dodger who invites Oliver to ‘Consider Yourself’ one of us! Fagin’s Gang set out to ‘Pick A Pocket or two’ and take Oliver along, but he is arrested and taken before the magistrates. When he finds Oliver was an innocent bystander, Mr Brownlow, the victim of the gang, takes Oliver in.

Fagin’s Thief, Bill Sykes is afraid Oliver will give away their set-up and sends his girlfriend , Nancy to get Oliver back. Eventually Oliver is restored to Mr Brownlow, who by a million to one chance happens to be his Grandfather. Fagin sets out to rebuild his gang with the Dodger. ‘Food glorious Food’ and ‘Where is Love’ are just two of the popular songs from Lionel Bart’s lively musical based on Charles Dicken’s "Oliver Twist"

Stepping Out

It’s 1983, Shergar kidnapped, Blackadder and Roland Rat on television, shoulder pads and sweatbands are in, as is Margaret Thatcher for a second term in office. Anti nuclear demos are peaking. Michael Jackson and Boy George are riding high in the charts. CD players and “My Little Pony” are in the shops.

In the midst of all this - join nine slightly dysfunctional women and one shy man in a church hall; as they laugh, cry, shout and dance their way through a weekly evening class in tap. By turns hilarious and sometimes poignant, we learn more about each one as the story progresses and join them on their own personal journeys – who will you identify with? Can Sylvia work out right from left in time? Will Rose’s hair look all right on the night? Surely Maxine will get the hats sorted soon? Will Geoffrey ever exert his manly influence? And will Vera abandon her Marigolds and bleach for the bright lights?

In the end, their labours are rewarded and so are the audience as the fledgling performers metamorphose into “The Mavis Turner Tappers” in a triumphant guest appearance at a local Charity Show.A great fun evening with genuine laughs and terpsichorean treats!
