'The Importance of Being Earnest'Date: Tuesday 2nd September 2008
Time: 19:30 (Doors open at 19:00)
Subtitled “A Trivial Comedy for Serious People”, Oscar Wilde’s best known comedy “The Importance of being Earnest” is as fresh and witty today as it was when first performed on Valentine’s Day 1895.
A contemporary of Wilde’s wrote at the time “…I never remember a greater triumph than the first night of this play”.
It remains one of the few great modern social comedies which has survived the period in which it was written. To quote Wilde himself; "The First Act is ingenious, the Second beautiful, the Third abominably clever”.
The text, dripping with Wildean wit, encompasses deception, the practice of Bunburying and the most infamous handbag in English Literature.
This fresh, fast moving production is assured to send every member of the audience home with a smile.
