Twelfth Night, a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 1601–1602 as a Twelfth Night's entertainment for the close of the Christmas season. The play centres on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Viola (who is disguised as Cesario) falls in love with Duke Orsino, who in turn is in love with Countess Olivia. Upon meeting Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her thinking she is a man.

VIOLA - A young girl in her 18 - 30s, who, by dressing as a boy, obtains a position at Duke Orsino’s household. In love with Orsino.

ORSINO - 30s - 50s, depending on the age of the actress playing Viola. He’s a ruler of Illyria, passionately in love with Olivia.

OLIVIA - 20s - 40s. Countess, who falls in love with Viola dressed as a boy.

SEBASTIAN - the same age as Viola (18 - 30s). He is Viola's twin brother who has been lost at sea.

MALVOLIO - 40s - 60s. He is a vain, pompous steward of Olivia's household.

SIR TOBY BELCH - 40 - 60s. The uncle of Lady Olivia, an ill-mannered character who drinks a lot and enjoys playing tricks on others.

SIR ANDREW AGUECHEEK - 40 - 60s. Suitor to Olivia. Quarrelsome and cowardly, a drunk, and not very clever.

MARIA - 40 - 60s. A central figure in Lady Olivia's household. She teams up with other characters to play jokes on Malvolio. In love with Sir Toby Belch.

CLOWN - a woman of any age. A substantial part - a fool in both Olivia’s and Orsino’s households. Would be good if the actress can sing.

FABIAN - a man of any age; a servant in Lady Olivia's household; he takes part in the practical joke on Malvolio.

VALENTINE - any age; small part; he is Orsino’s attendant.

ANTONIO - any age; the sea captain who fishes Sebastian out of the ocean and saves his life.

CAPTAIN - any age; a man who saves Viola from drowning.

OFFICER - any age. Small part with lines
